Jack Of All Trades: Unmatched Career Training
Organized Labour Plumber, Gasfitter and member of UA Canada Local 71, Martin McNaughton, discusses how his union membership provided a much-needed career boost.
Question: Why did you decide to join a trade union?
A: The local union was recommended to me after completing my first three years of apprenticeship in the non-union workforce. I wanted to get experience in the industrial and commercial workplace.
Question: How have you benefited from a unionized workforce?
A: I now receive higher wages, work in safer environments and have access to higher echelons of training for my career growth.
Question: What would you say to someone entering the workforce about union work?
A: My union guides its members to be the highest trained and most valuable tradesmen in the industry. It's an opportunity that I, otherwise, would not have had access to.
